PLEASE NOTE

This website is being upgraded to the latest verstion of the website system - this means copying the contents from old to new. Accordingly, this one isn't going to show any more new news (to save on work!). Any feedback very welcome!!

The historic Victorian town of Winchelsea, Australia was founded in the middle 1800's (nineteenth century) as a ford across the Barwon River. HistoricWinchelsea.com is dedicated to the town -  Winchelsea has a range of shops, facilities and tourism & leisure activities and its location on the Princess Highway between Geelong and Colac makes it a popular traveller stop and turning-off point for the Great Ocean Road , Surf Coast and The Otways .

Bushfire fundraising auction

A major effort to raise funds for the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal is to be held by the Wensleydale Community at the Wurdale Hall on the 1st March 2009, from 1pm to 4pm (click here for directions from Google Maps).

Businesses and individuals are donating goods and services to be auctioned off and/or raffled to raise money for the fire victims, so please offer your support for those who have lost everything.

All money will go to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal to help Bushfire Victims begin to recover from the terrible events which they have endured.

Please consider what you may be able to offer as an item or service which could be offered in a fundraising event by auction or raffle.

For verification of this fundraiser, contact Lynne Hume (Events Planning Officer), Surfcoast Shire , on 03 5261 0600.

Christmas Lights Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the 2008 Christmas Lights Competition, as organised by The Lions Club of Winchelsea. Judges extensively toured Winchelsea to find the top 3 best-decorated houses - biggest, brightest, most eye-catching, and  held a small presentation mid-January to congratulate and officially award the prizes to the residents.

First prize of a $150 voucher went to the Ludmons, second prize of $100 voucher to the Haywards, and third prize to the Larkins, with a $50 voucher. All vouchers were for local Winchelsea businesses. Lions President Murray Leak congratulated the winners for their efforts to brighten the town over Christmas, with garden lights, roof lights, blow-up figures and statues.

Many other residences put on a good show. Previously organised by the Winchelsea Business & Tourism Association, the Lions Club has taken over the project which encourages Christmas spirit and community togetherness. The competition will be run again for Christmas 2009, and competition organiser Lion Neville Densley says residents should plan ahead to be in the running.

The Winchelsea Lions Club is a voluntary organisation working for local, regional and even international community benefit. Find out more about Lions online at winchelsealionsclub.org.au.

Fire Bans now active
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) have announced that Fire Bans are now in effect, which means no burning off or fires without a permit. See the CFA website for full details. The Southwest of Victoria is again very dry with exceptionally little rain through winter - authorities are concerned about the level of fuel available particularly in the Otways and along the Surf Coast, with extreme fire danger risk.

New Cafe for Winchelsea

New business Winchelsea Larder has opened its doors. Situated in the premises previously known as Pepperjacks Restaurant (and still bearing the old signs!), Winchelsea Larder specialises in regional gourmet produce - high quality food and drink from the Southwest Victoria (approximately the diamond-shaped area between Geelong and Warrnambool, Ballarat and the coast). Ideally situated on the Princes Highway, Winchelsea Larder offers light lunches including regional Wines of the Day or boutique local beers, organic fairtrade coffee, loose-leaf tea, cakes and sweets, and gourmet sandwiches, wraps and rolls.

The shelves are stocked with jams, chutneys, honeys, spices, olives and olive oils, teas, gift hampers and more. Much of the produce is used in the menu, which is available for takeaway too (including as an eco-friendly picnic complete with bio-degradable or recyclable plates, cutlery and wrapping). Wednesdays and Fridays see the delivery of La Madre artisanal sourdough breads.

Facilities include a disabled toilet, internet access, comfortable leather chairs, daily newspapers and a range of information on some of the producers. Winchelsea Larder also exhibits local artworks - framed photos and paintings by local artists, available for sale and rotated on a monthly basis. Ask for a Coffee Card, to get every 6th cup free - and Winchelsea Larder has announced that Thursdays are Half-Price Senior's Days, with hot drinks, cakes & slices, and Devonshire Teas at half-price for each Senior's Card presented.

Most of WInchelsea Larder's items are avaiable for purchase online, and in fact a large range of wines and beers can be included in any orders (not currently available in the retail outlet due to liquor licencing restrictions). See www.aTasteOfTheRegion.com.au for details.

Drop in for a coffee & cake Special, and see what Southwest Victoria has to offer.
